Today I am speaking once again with Marty Neumeier. The last time we spoke it was on the topic of branding, a topic on which Marty is an internationally renown authority. He has written many books including Zag which was named one of the "top hundred business books of all time" for its insights into radical differentiation; and The Brand Gap, considered by many the foundational text for modern brand building. It fascinates me how often musicians are told to find a real job and that they will never be successful in terms of a career at their art. However, it seems that "real jobs" are less and less of a "real option" in today's economy as technology is taking over in what Marty is calling "the robotic age."
Over the last few years Brian has carved his niche in the current music industry. After having been head buyer for a popular Canadian music retail chain, he has now become an advocate of the freemium music model. His Twitter bio reads: "creative coach. music marketer. podcaster. blogger. guy behind The DIY Daily Newsletter & Podcast" and for those of you who don't know, Brian puts out a podcast every day! Wow!
A few years back I came across Thorney Bleeder Records and their free compilation, "Get Thorny". Since then, it seems that Brian's name, along with that of Thorny Bleeder, are constantly associated with exciting music updates and a wealth of music business knowledge. Brian's DIY Daily and blog posts carry some priceless insight for bands that should not go unread. Getting the chance to pick Brian's brain on a topic he knows better than most was interesting and insightful to say the least. Thanks again, Brian, for sharing your knowledge!
